Programs


Independence for the Blind of West Florida (IB West) offers a wide range of support services.  Our programs are designed to meet the emotional and practical needs of individuals who live with vision loss.  Although tutorial sessions and classes are held at our center, counselors often travel to clients' homes and places of work for individualized instruction and evaluation.

Independent Living Program
Skills taught through the Independent Living Program include safety measures, record keeping, preparing meals and the use of special adaptive aids.  Also, the counselors provide social services to include individual and family counseling, referrals to other agencies, and management of secondary disabilities such as diabetes. Computer Technology Program
The Computer Technology Program offers vocational training including basic computer operation and the use of computer-related adaptive technology and software.  This program also provides on-site services at the work place to help with accommodation issues such as re-engineering job-site computers for use by visually impaired employees. Vocational Rehabilitation Program
The Vocational Rehabilitation Program offers instruction in basic keyboarding, resume' and cover letter writing, interviewing techniques, job search methods and determining a persons' job skills, aptitudes, and interests. [top]

Summer Transition Program
Summer Transition prepares high school students for college and the workforce through computer and adaptive software training, socialization and recreational skills, and vocational training such as resume preparation, interviewing skills and internships. [top]

Children's Program
The Children's Program assists blind school-aged children in using computer and gaining independent living skills. [top]

Early Intervention Program
Early Intervention serves visually impaired babies and pre-school aged children, enhancing all areas of child development with cognitive, daily living skills, orientation and mobility, and sensory and motor skills training, while supporting and educating their families. [top]
